Joe Root and rory Burns put in an unbroken stand of 100 since Australia toiled at the next Semester on day three of the fourth Ashes Test.
SCORECARD | TEXT COMMENTARY
Root (47no) combined Burns (62no) nine chunks into the day’s play – that finally started at 1.30pm after persistent rain – when nightwatchman Craig Overton (5) snicked behind to hands Josh Hazlewood his 50th Ashes wicket.
Hazlewood angled a delivery , got it clip on the exterior edge of Overton as the batsman pressed forward and then to sew, adding just two runs.
Hazlewood seemed likely to add to his tally, testing Root and Burns with a string of hard deliveries, however the skipper and his partner made it through that initial spell along with the close three-hour second semester on a pitch with few gremlins to depart England 125-2, 372 runs in arrears.
Mitchell Starc, enjoying his first Test of the series, was especially leaky – the left-armer conceded the border by which Burns nailed his fourth Test fifty, from 100 balls and is likely at almost four times.
England – who has to avoid defeat so as to keep their hopes of regaining that the urn living – resumed on 23-1, a colossal 474 runs behind Australia’s Steve Smith-inspired 497-8 announced, with Joe Denly (4) having dropped overdue on day two into a outstanding short-leg catch from Matthew Wade.
