Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff admits he was”diverted” by transfer speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.
United held”high-level” talks with Newcastle earlier this summer over a potential deal for its 21-year-old, who admitted at the time he had been”flattered” by the strategy.
A move failed to materialise for Longstaff, with United reluctant to meet with Newcastle’s #50m evaluation of the midfielder.
“You can occasionally get distracted by the external sound and, possibly for just a little bit in the summertime, I did,” Longstaff informed NUFC TV.
“It’s hard not to when you move anyplace and you notice your face on the front of a paper or you turn the telly on and folks are talking about you personally.
“It’s not like they’re speaking about little matters, they are talking about stuff that can change your life, really.”
Longstaff was thrust into the spotlight when Rafael Benitez handed him a top-flight debut as a substitute at a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Boxing Day .
Before a knee injury cut short his debut year by February, he had opened his Premier League account using a goal from Burnley in a 2-0 win.
Following his rise to prominence, the midfielder found ways to manage the pressure.

“By the end of the day, provided that you are doing what they want and they are content with you, that’s how it’s got to become.”
Longstaff admits among his acquaintances does not recognise him and is appreciating comparative anonymity while his inventory has risen in his career.
“He was reading the newspaper and big Joe [Joelinton] was about the front and he stopped me and began talking, and that I could tell he didn’t realise I had played,” said Longstaff.
“He had been speaking about how great Joe was how good the result was at Spurs. The page turned and I had been on it, and now I had to prevent myself then he was speaking about me personally.
“I thought,’I expect he is not likely to slag off me here, I expect he is not likely to batter ‘, which was pretty amusing, however, he said some nice things”
