Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy impressed by Aaron Connolly

Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy says young Aaron Connolly is very much in his ideas for their upcoming matches.
Connolly has been drafted into the Irish squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers at Georgia and Switzerland.
However, McCarthy says that the 19-year-olds weekend reveals that he deserves to be in the mix over the next fortnight.
I would not have put him in the group unless I thought that he had been (in contention), stated McCarthy.
He was exceptional (against Tottenham). His intentions were both very good – .
His motion was great, he obtained across the protector and after that, having experienced the first shot saved, he had the presence of mind to spin and set it in the web.
He really has got some character about the pitch, that is for certain.
If somebody gets in the very first team in the Premier League and is playing well and scoring goals, then hes every possibility of getting a chance in our staff.
Im surprised by him, Im delighted by his performances.
The fact that hes come in here on a top with some momentum from the weekend is fine as well. He offers me a excellent alternative.
McCarthy remains optimistic that David McGoldrick and Shane Duffy may be fit in time to play a part in the qualifiers.
He explained:I had a message from Shane before on and that he said he is feeling great.
I havent spoken to David for a while but (Sheffield United director ) Chris Wilder mentioned theyre doing what they can to make him match.
Both lads want to be fit and, even if they could get there, Ill wait as long as I can.
